Yes. ChatGPT has a free plan that anyone can use, with no time limit and no credit card. As of November 2026, OpenAI's pricing page lists unlimited everyday text chats on the free plan. The limits apply to everything around those chats: file uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, memory, and OpenAI's advanced reasoning models.
This guide covers what the free version includes, where its limits are, whether there's a free trial of ChatGPT Plus, and how OpenAI pays for all those free users.
Is ChatGPT free to use?
Yes. OpenAI's pricing page says "the free version of ChatGPT is available to everyone," and its Free plan page says there's no set time limit. You create an account, then chat on the web or in OpenAI's official iPhone and Android apps.
Two things are worth knowing before you start:
- Ads may appear. OpenAI started testing ads for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans in the US on February 9, 2026. As of October 21, 2026, ChatGPT ads were available in 89 countries. Ads show below an answer, are labeled, and according to OpenAI don't change what ChatGPT says. OpenAI says it doesn't show ads to accounts it identifies as belonging to people under 18.
- You can turn ads off, with a tradeoff. Where ads are running, Free users can switch to an ads-free mode in Settings. OpenAI says this means fewer messages and no access to some tools, such as image generation and deep research (OpenAI Help: Ads in ChatGPT).
What the free version of ChatGPT includes
According to OpenAI's pricing page (checked November 1, 2026), the free plan includes:
- Unlimited everyday text chats, subject to OpenAI's abuse guardrails.
- Web search for up-to-date answers.
- Limited file and image uploads, so you can share a document or photo a few times.
- Limited image creation.
- Limited voice chats.
- Limited deep research reports.
- Limited memory, including some memory of past chats.
- Projects to group related chats, plus study mode, the built-in browser, and plugins.
- Limited Codex and ChatGPT Work access in the desktop app.
That covers most everyday jobs: asking questions, rewriting an email, explaining a topic, planning a trip, or brainstorming.
ChatGPT free limits
The free plan gets tighter as tasks get heavier. OpenAI doesn't publish exact daily numbers for uploads or images. Its Free Tier FAQ says these tools have their own limits, separate from chat, and that ChatGPT tells you when you hit one and when it resets.
| Free | Go ($8/mo) | Plus ($20/mo) | |
|---|---|---|---|

| Advanced reasoning models (GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra) | No | No | Yes |
| Text you can paste in one message | About 12 pages | About 40 pages | About 40 pages (about 320 with reasoning) |
| Uploads, images, data analysis | Limited | More | Expanded |
| Deep research | Limited | Limited | Expanded |
| Scheduled tasks | No | Yes | Yes |
| Voice with video | No | Yes | Yes |
| Response speed | Limited by demand | Not specified | Fast |

In practice, free users notice the limits when they upload several files in a day, ask for lots of images, run deep research more than occasionally, or paste in a long document. Responses can also slow down when demand is high.
Is there a ChatGPT Plus free trial?
Not a standard one. As of November 2026, neither the pricing page nor OpenAI's Plus help article lists a free trial. Plus is $20 a month, billed monthly.
Free trials do show up as promotions, and they come and go:
- Invite trials. OpenAI's promotions FAQ says eligible subscribers sometimes get invite links that give friends a limited free trial of a paid plan (its example is three months). These are usually for new users or people on the free plan, and some require a payment method.
- Student offers. In 2026 OpenAI gave eligible US college students four free months of Plus, but the claim deadline was October 31, 2026. See Is ChatGPT free for students? for what's still available.
If you do get a trial, note the end date. OpenAI says trials renew as a paid subscription using the card on file unless you cancel first. The same FAQ says invite codes can't be sold or transferred, so skip anyone selling "free Plus" codes.
Want to test paid features without a trial? Go is $8 a month and can be canceled anytime, according to OpenAI Help: What is ChatGPT Go?
Why is ChatGPT free? How OpenAI pays for it
Running ChatGPT costs a lot. OpenAI's ads FAQ says keeping the Free and Go plans fast and reliable "requires significant infrastructure and ongoing investment." Going by OpenAI's own pages, money comes in from a few places:
- Paid personal plans. Go ($8 a month in the US), Plus ($20), and Pro ($100, $200, or $500).
- Business plans. ChatGPT Business is $25 per user per month billed monthly, according to ChatGPT Learn. Enterprise plans are sold through OpenAI's sales team, and universities can buy ChatGPT Edu.
- The API. Developers who build OpenAI's models into their own apps pay for API usage separately from any ChatGPT plan.
- Ads on Free and Go. OpenAI says advertising "helps support free and low-cost access to ChatGPT," and that more than 100,000 advertisers had run campaigns by October 2026. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts don't get ads.
One more thing free users should know: OpenAI says it may use conversations to improve its models, and you can opt out in Data Controls (OpenAI Help).
How much does ChatGPT cost if you upgrade?
- Go, $8 a month: more messages with tools, uploads, images, and memory. May include ads.
- Plus, $20 a month: advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research, full Codex, no ads.
- Pro, $100 to $500 a month: OpenAI's highest limits and Pro reasoning, for heavy daily use.

Is the ChatGPT app free?
Yes. OpenAI's official ChatGPT apps for iPhone and Android are free to download and work on the free plan. If you subscribe through the App Store or Google Play, Apple or Google bills you instead of OpenAI.
Watch out for look-alike apps with "ChatGPT" in the name. Check that the developer is OpenAI, and never pay a third party for "ChatGPT access."
How to get more free AI without paying
If you keep hitting the free limits, try these before paying:
- Use more than one free assistant. Claude and Gemini both have free plans with their own limits. See Is Claude free? and Is Gemini free?.
- Write tighter prompts. Clear instructions get better answers in fewer messages. Our guide to writing better AI prompts covers the habits that help most.
- Try a free app with several models. cutGPT is a free AI chat app for iPhone, Android, and the web with no subscription. It isn't ChatGPT and isn't made by OpenAI. It gives you several AI models in one place, it's supported by ads, and eligible users can earn small promotional rewards cashed out to PayPal. Amounts vary, so treat them as a bonus rather than income; the rules are in the platform terms. See cutGPT vs ChatGPT.

FAQ
Is ChatGPT completely free?
The free plan costs nothing and has no time limit, and everyday text chats are unlimited. Uploads, images, voice, deep research, and memory are limited, and advanced reasoning models need a paid plan.
Is the free version of ChatGPT good enough?
For quick questions, rewriting, explanations, and planning, usually yes. You'll feel the limits with long documents, lots of images, frequent deep research, or hard multi-step problems that benefit from reasoning models.
Does free ChatGPT have a message limit?
Not for everyday text chats, which are unlimited under OpenAI's abuse guardrails. Tools like file uploads, image creation, and data analysis have separate limits, and ChatGPT shows when they reset.
Does free ChatGPT have ads?
It can. As of November 2026, ads may appear for eligible adult users on the Free and Go plans in the countries where OpenAI runs them. Plus and Pro are ad-free.
Is there a free version of ChatGPT Plus?
No. Plus costs $20 a month, and OpenAI doesn't list a standard free trial. Promotional trials appear from time to time through invites or special offers.
