Yes, students can use ChatGPT for free, the same way anyone can. The free plan includes unlimited everyday text chats and study mode. What students don't get, as of November 2026, is a standing discount on ChatGPT Plus. OpenAI's 2026 student offer of four free months of Plus closed on October 31, 2026.
Here's what's still available, what the free plan does well for coursework, and other free options worth knowing about.
The short answer
- ChatGPT Free: free for everyone, students included, with no time limit (ChatGPT Free plan).
- ChatGPT Plus for students: no current discount. Plus is $20 a month.
- Codex credits: verified university students in the US and Canada can still claim $100 in credits for OpenAI's coding agent.
- Your school: some universities buy ChatGPT Edu for their students, so check with your school's IT office.
Student offers from OpenAI
Back to School 2026 (closed)
OpenAI's Back to School offer gave eligible students four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus. It was open to full-time and part-time college and graduate students at eligible US degree-granting schools, verified through SheerID. The claim deadline was October 31, 2026.
If you claimed it, keep track of the end date. A payment method was required, and OpenAI says the subscription renews at $20 a month after the free period unless you cancel. If you cancel early, Plus continues until the end of that billing month and any remaining free months are forfeited.
OpenAI has run student promotions before, so another may appear. Check OpenAI's help center rather than coupon sites.
Codex for Students (open as of November 2026)
OpenAI's Codex for Students page offers $100 in ChatGPT credits for Codex, OpenAI's coding agent. The terms:
- current students at degree-granting universities in the US or Canada, living in the US or Canada when they claim;
- verification through SheerID with a university email, though your ChatGPT account can use a personal email;
- works with a Free, Go, Plus, or Pro account;
- one offer per student, and credits expire 12 months after they're granted.
These credits only extend Codex usage. They don't upgrade your plan or add regular chat features.
For schools and teachers
OpenAI's pricing page lists ChatGPT Edu, a plan universities buy for their campus, and ChatGPT for Teachers, which is free for verified US K–12 educators through June 2027. Neither is something a student signs up for alone, but your school may already provide access.
What the free plan covers for coursework
For most studying, the free plan is enough. Based on OpenAI's pricing page, checked November 1, 2026:
| Task | On the free plan |
|---|---|
| Explaining a concept, step by step | Yes, unlimited text chats |
| Study mode quizzes and practice questions | Yes |
| Uploading lecture slides or a reading | Yes, limited |
| Pasting a long paper | About 12 pages per message |
| Searching the web for current sources | Yes |
| Deep research reports | Limited |
| Creating diagrams or images | Limited |
| Advanced reasoning models for hard math or code | No (Plus and up) |
Study mode is the feature students should try first. OpenAI's study mode guide says it's available on every plan on web, iPhone, and Android. Instead of handing over an answer, it asks questions, explains ideas step by step, and checks your understanding. You can ask it to quiz you, write practice questions, or turn your notes into flashcard-style review. On the web, type @study in the message box or go to chatgpt.com/studymode.
Study mode follows your plan's normal limits, so it doesn't give free users extra uploads. It also doesn't work inside Projects, custom GPTs, or Temporary Chats.
One more detail for younger students: OpenAI says it doesn't show ads to accounts it identifies as belonging to people under 18 (Ads in ChatGPT).
Other free options for students
Gemini. Google is running a student offer that's still open. According to Google's announcement, eligible US college students can get one year of Google AI Pro free (normally $19.99 a month), and eligible students in more than 140 other markets can get a year of Google AI Plus. Both must be redeemed by December 31, 2026, need a payment method, and renew at the regular price unless you cancel. Gemini's free plan also has a student hub with study notebooks and flashcards. Claude. Claude's free plan is good for reading and writing help. See Is Claude free?
cutGPT. A free AI chat app for iPhone, Android, and the web with no subscription. It isn't ChatGPT and isn't made by OpenAI. It gives you several AI models in one place and is supported by ads. Eligible users can earn small promotional rewards cashed out to PayPal; amounts vary, so think of them as a bonus rather than income. The rules are in the platform terms.

Using AI honestly for school
A free AI plan can make you a better student or get you in trouble, depending on how you use it. A few rules that hold up:
- Check your class policy first. Rules vary by school, course, and assignment. OpenAI's own study mode guide says to follow your instructor's AI-use rules for graded work.
- Use it to learn, not to submit. Have it explain, quiz you, or critique your draft. Don't hand in its writing as yours.
- Verify facts and citations. AI tools can invent sources and get details wrong. Our guide on how to fact-check AI answers shows how.
- Keep your own notes. If you can't explain the answer without the chat open, you haven't learned it yet.
