None of the personal plans offer annual billing. OpenAI's help center says Go, Plus, and Pro are billed monthly only.
What ChatGPT Free includes
The free plan handles most everyday tasks well: questions, explanations, rewriting, short summaries, brainstorming, and planning. You also get web search, study mode, projects, and limited voice, uploads, image creation, deep research, and memory.
The limits show up with heavier work. OpenAI doesn't publish exact numbers for uploads or images; ChatGPT tells you when you've hit a limit and when it resets. You can't use the advanced reasoning models, and replies may slow down at busy times. Ads may appear in countries where OpenAI runs them.

What ChatGPT Go adds
Go costs $8 a month in the US and is available in every country ChatGPT supports. According to OpenAI's Go help article, it includes everything in Free plus:
- higher limits for image creation, file uploads, and data analysis;
- longer memory and a larger context window, about 40 pages of text per message instead of about 12;
- projects, tasks, and Library;
- a Think mode for harder questions, which uses GPT-5.6 Luna;
- voice with video.
What Go leaves out: Plus's advanced reasoning models (GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra), expanded deep research, full Codex, image creation with reasoning, and interactive tables and charts. Go may also show ads, same as Free.
Go makes sense if your only problem with Free is running out of uploads or images. If you need stronger reasoning, skip to Plus.
What ChatGPT Plus adds
Plus costs $20 a month. On top of Go, it adds:
- Advanced reasoning. GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra handle multi-step problems, analysis, math, and code better than the everyday model.
- More research. Expanded deep research for long, sourced reports.
- Coding. Codex on the web, in the terminal, in your code editor, and on iPhone.
- ChatGPT Work on desktop, web, and mobile, instead of limited desktop access.
- Better images. Image creation with reasoning, for more complex and accurate results.
- Priority. OpenAI's Plus help article promises priority access during busy periods and faster replies.
- No ads. OpenAI says Plus accounts don't get ads (Ads in ChatGPT).
If you use up your Codex or ChatGPT Work allowance, Plus lets you buy extra credits instead of upgrading.
Is ChatGPT Plus worth it?
Plus costs $240 a year; Go costs $96. Here's a quick way to decide.
Stay on Free if you:
- ask a few questions a day and rarely see a limit message;
- mostly need quick answers, rewrites, and explanations;
- don't mind switching to another free assistant when you hit a limit.
Pick Go if you:
- keep running out of uploads or images but are happy with the answers;
- want longer memory and scheduled tasks for $8.
Pick Plus if you:
- use ChatGPT for work, especially analysis, long documents, or coding;
- need deep research reports more than now and then;
- want answers from the stronger reasoning models;
- want ChatGPT without ads.

ChatGPT Plus vs Pro
Pro is for people who use ChatGPT for hours every day. OpenAI offers three Pro tiers at $100, $200, and $500 a month. All three include the same core features; higher tiers mainly get more usage.
Compared with Plus, Pro adds:
- Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra;
- much larger context, about 250 pages per message (about 680 with reasoning);
- longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions;
- Dot, an always-on agent;
- unlimited, faster image creation and maximum deep research;
- monthly API credits matching the plan price, once the subscription has been active for at least 7 days (OpenAI Help).
Only the $500 tier gets Ultrafast mode. If you rarely hit Plus limits, Pro won't change much for you.
FAQ
What's the difference between ChatGPT Go and Plus?
Both include unlimited everyday text chats and higher limits than Free. Plus adds the advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research, full Codex, interactive charts, priority access, and no ads. Go costs $8 and may show ads.
Is ChatGPT Go worth it?
It's worth it if Free's upload, image, or memory limits are your main frustration. It won't help much if you want better answers to hard problems, since it doesn't include Plus's reasoning models.
Does ChatGPT Plus have ads?
No. As of November 2026, OpenAI says ads may appear only on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu are ad-free.
How much is ChatGPT Plus per month?
$20 a month, billed monthly. OpenAI doesn't offer an annual Plus plan.
Is ChatGPT Plus better than Pro?
No. Pro includes everything in Plus with much higher limits, Pro reasoning, and larger context. It costs at least five times as much, so it only makes sense if you regularly run out of Plus usage.
Is there a free alternative to paying for ChatGPT?
Yes. Claude and Gemini have free plans; see Is Claude free? and Is Gemini free?. cutGPT is a free AI chat app for iPhone, Android, and the web with no subscription and several AI models. It isn't made by OpenAI and won't match Plus's reasoning models on heavy work. It's supported by ads, and eligible users can earn small promotional rewards cashed out to PayPal; amounts vary, and the rules are in the platform terms.
