Yes, Gemini is free. Anyone with a personal Google account can use the Gemini app on the web, Android, and iPhone without paying. The free plan covers chat, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, and Gems. What it doesn't include is Google's stronger models: free users get the Flash-Lite model, and the Pro models start with the paid Google AI Pro plan.
The details below come from Google's Gemini subscriptions page, the Google AI plans page, and the Gemini Apps Help Center, all checked as of November 2026. Google changes its plans often, so treat this as a snapshot.
The short answer
- Is Gemini free? Yes. The free plan costs $0 and works in the Gemini app and at gemini.google.com.
- Which model do free users get? Flash-Lite. Google AI Plus adds the Flash model, and Google AI Pro adds Gemini 4 Argon and Google's Pro model.
- Is Gemini Pro free? Not on the standard free plan. The one exception right now is a free year of Google AI Pro for eligible US college students (more on that below).
- What does paying cost? Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month, Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month, and Google AI Ultra starts at $99.99 a month, according to the Google AI plans page.
What's free in the Gemini app
As of November 2026, Google's subscriptions page lists these features on the free plan:
| Feature | Free plan |
|---|---|
| Model | Flash-Lite |
| Image generation and editing | Yes |
| Deep Research | Yes |
| Gemini Live (voice conversations) | Yes |
| Canvas | Yes |
| Gems (custom assistants) | Yes |
| Gemini Notebook (research and writing assistant) | Yes |
| Google Flow | Limited access, including limited Nano Banana Pro |
| Cloud storage | 15 GB across Gmail, Drive, and Photos |
| Video generation | No (starts with Google AI Plus) |
That's enough for most everyday tasks: asking questions, drafting and editing writing, summarizing a document, planning a trip, or making a quick image. Deep Research on the free plan is a real bonus, since it can browse many sources and write a report for you. Just know that Google may switch off heavier features like Deep Research for free users when demand is high (Gemini Apps Help).
There is also a separate free option for developers. Google says the Gemini API has a free tier with input and output tokens at no cost for experimenting, with paid plans for higher rate limits (subscriptions page). That's for building apps, not for chatting.
Gemini free limits
Google doesn't give free users a fixed number of messages. The Help Center explains how the limits work as of November 2026:
- Compute-based limits. How much you can do depends on how complex your prompt is, which features you use, and how long the chat is. A short question costs very little. Long chats, big file uploads, Deep Research, and image or video generation cost a lot more.
- Five-hour refresh with a weekly cap. Your limit refreshes every 5 hours until you hit your weekly limit.
- Smaller context window. Free accounts get a 32k-token context window, compared with 128k on Google AI Plus and 1 million on Pro and Ultra. In practice, that means Gemini can "read" less of a long document at once on the free plan.
- Free users get limited first. If capacity runs short, Google says it may limit users without a plan before paid users.
When you get close to a limit, Gemini tells you, and when you hit it, it tells you when your limit refreshes. You can check where you stand in Settings under Usage Limits on gemini.google.com.
Google's own tip for stretching the free allowance: start a new chat when you move to a new topic, so Gemini doesn't have to re-read a long conversation before each answer.
Google AI Plus vs Pro vs Ultra
Here's how the paid plans compare to Free, based on Google's plans page and Help Center as of November 2026. US prices, billed monthly, before tax.
| Free | Google AI Plus | Google AI Pro | Google AI Ultra | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $4.99/mo | $19.99/mo | $99.99/mo (5x) or $199.99/mo (20x) |
| Gemini models | Flash-Lite | Adds Flash | Adds Gemini 4 Argon and the Pro model | Highest access to all models |
| Usage limits | Standard | 2x Free | 4x Free | 5x or 20x Pro |
| Context window | 32k tokens | 128k tokens | 1M tokens | 1M tokens |
| Video generation | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Gemini inside Google apps | No | Gmail, Vids, and more | Gmail, Docs, Vids, and more | Highest limits |
| Storage | 15 GB | 400 GB | 5 TB | 20 TB or 30 TB |
| Extras | None | 200 Google Flow credits a month | YouTube Premium Lite, Google Home Premium Standard | YouTube Premium, Project Genie |
A few things stand out:
- Google AI Plus (formerly called AI Premium) is the cheap step up. You get the Flash model, double the usage, video generation, and 400 GB of storage. It's available in more than 160 countries.
- Google AI Pro is the plan most people mean when they ask about "Gemini Pro." It's the first tier with Gemini 4 Argon and the Pro model, the 1-million-token context window, and Tasks in Gemini. The 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite also make it good value if you'd pay for those anyway.
- Google AI Ultra is for very heavy users. The $99.99 tier gives 5x Pro's limits and the $199.99 tier gives 20x.
Google's subscriptions page says its AI plans are for people 18 and older. For a wider look at how these prices compare with ChatGPT and Claude, see ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini pricing or the AI pricing comparison.
Free Gemini for students
Google is currently running a student offer. According to Google's student page, as of November 2026:
- Eligible US college students aged 18 and up can get Google AI Pro free for one year.
- New users qualify, and so do students whose 2025 AI Pro trial has ended.
- You have to verify eligibility each year, and you need a valid payment method to sign up.
- The offer can be redeemed until December 31, 2026. After the free year, Google AI Pro renews at $19.99 a month unless you cancel.
If you're a student, this is the easiest way to get the Pro model for free. Set a reminder before the year ends if you don't plan to keep paying. If you also use ChatGPT for school, our guide on ChatGPT for students covers what OpenAI offers.
Other free options if you hit the limit
If the free plan keeps running out, you don't have to pay right away.
Use other free assistants alongside Gemini. ChatGPT, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot all have free versions with their own limits, so you can switch when one runs dry. Try a free multi-model app. cutGPT is a free AI chat app for iPhone, Android, and the web with no subscription. Ads pay for the AI models, and you can chat with several AI models in one place. Eligible users earn small promotional rewards that vary and can be cashed out to PayPal; treat them as a bonus, not income. The reward rules are in the platform terms. If you live in Gmail and Google Docs, Gemini's built-in integration is hard to beat, but for general chat you can compare the two in cutGPT vs Gemini.
