A few notes on the table:
- ChatGPT. OpenAI's pricing page says free text chats are unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails. Free users also get the smaller context window (27K tokens for the instant model versus 54K on Plus), and response times depend on available capacity. More detail in ChatGPT Free vs Plus.
- Gemini. Google says Gemini app limits are based on prompt complexity, features used, and chat length, and refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap. See Is Gemini free?.
- Claude. Anthropic doesn't give a fixed message count. How fast you hit the limit depends on the model, chat length, and file size. See Is Claude free?.
- Copilot. Microsoft's Copilot terms, effective August 18, 2026, require a Microsoft account. You can also sign in with Google or Apple on mobile. The same terms say Copilot may include ads if you don't pay for Microsoft 365.
- Perplexity. Free users can sign in with Apple or Google. Pro adds advanced models and image generation.
Best free AI app for writing, studying, and voice
Writing. Claude's free plan includes Artifacts, Claude Docs, and file creation, which helps with longer drafts you'll keep editing. ChatGPT is the easier pick for quick rewrites, since free text chats are unlimited. Either way, better prompts get better drafts: see how to write better AI prompts.
Studying. ChatGPT's study mode is on the free plan, and Gemini's free plan includes Deep Research and Canvas. Gemini also fits well if your notes already live in Google Drive. If you're a student, read Is ChatGPT free for students? and our guide to using AI for studying.
Voice. Gemini Live is included free. ChatGPT includes limited voice chats on the free plan, Claude's free plan includes voice mode, and Meta says you can have voice conversations in the Meta AI app.
Research. Perplexity is built around search, and its free plan allows practically unlimited basic searches. For anything that matters, check the sources yourself. Our guide on using AI for research covers how.
Apps that pay you back
Most free AI apps make money by selling upgrades. cutGPT works differently: there's no subscription, ads pay for the AI models, and eligible users earn small promotional rewards that can be cashed out to PayPal.
To be clear about what that means:
- It isn't income. Rewards are a discretionary promotional program. They vary, they're usually small, and cutGPT can change or end the program.
- Tapping ads doesn't earn more. cutGPT's terms say tapping or clicking ads does not increase rewards.
- There's a minimum. Payouts go to PayPal once your confirmed balance reaches the current minimum, which the terms put at $5.
- You must be 18 or older, and you need a free account.
cutGPT also has an optional Boost: watch an ad to get a limited number of replies from a stronger AI model. Boost has no cash value and doesn't add to rewards. If you skip the ad, you still get a normal reply.
We don't rank cutGPT above ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude for raw quality. It's the pick if you want free everyday AI help and like the idea of getting a little back. The full rules are in the platform terms, and there's more on the trade-offs in cutGPT vs Duck.ai and the wider ChatGPT alternatives roundup.
How to choose
- Start with one main app and one backup. Free limits reset on different schedules, so a second app covers you when the first one runs out.
- Match the app to the job. Pick ChatGPT for general questions, Gemini for Google-heavy studying, Claude for long writing, and Perplexity for search.
- Only pay when you hit the wall often. If you keep running into limits, compare plans in ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini pricing and the AI pricing table, then read is a paid AI subscription worth it?.
